Steel and other metals get the VIP recycling treatment. But what about plastics, rubber, textiles, foam, wiring sheaths and mixed composites? Where do they go?

1. The Metal Cliff, which can be recycled
Sources say that around 70% of a typical car (mostly steel, aluminium, copper) is recovered and sold back into the economy. So the utilisation happens, that’s good news!
You have the vehicle dismantlers strip engines, starters, radiators,s and catalytic converters; shredders separate ferrous from non-ferrous metals.

2. The Mysterious “Ash Heap” — Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR)
After a car is shredded, the leftover materials — such as plastics, fabrics, glass, foam and rubber — are called Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR).
In technical terms, ASR can make up nearly one-third of all shredded material. You will find it difficult to recycle because everything is mixed together — for example, seat foam stuck to wires, coated fabrics, and broken glass tangled with electronic parts.
In Australia, ASR is one of the biggest non-recyclable car waste streams. So where does it end up? Some of it goes to landfill, some is used in low-value products. Some is burned to recover energy. However, they may not be a sustainable solution.

3. Landfill, Downcycling, And “Energy Recovery” — The Three
Non-recyclable car parts typically meet one of three fates:
- Landfill: The simplest but worst option. Plastics and foams do not break down easily and can leach chemicals.
- Downcycling: It involves turning the mixed plastics into low-value products like the road base and panelling. It keeps material out of the fill but destroys material quality.
- Energy recovery: Some ASR is incinerated in waste-to-energy plants. This recovers heat but emits CO₂ and sometimes toxic pollutants unless tightly controlled.

4. The Ev Twist — Greener Driving, Trickier Trash
Electric vehicles are the real big thing in the markets. EVs contain high-value metals. (lithium, cobalt) Even they contain new complex polymers and composites — nylon-reinforced parts, flame-retardant plastics, and resin-bound battery housings. It is not that easy to be recycled.
Australian innovators are already working on technology and mechanisms to tackle these “unrecyclable” polymers back into virgin-quality feedstock. This could be a real solution in the coming years.
5. Interesting (And Slightly Alarming) Facts
- According to a study, 5% of Australia’s vehicle fleet reaches end-of-life and the figures are close to 850,000 cars.
- A lot, around hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastics, glass, rubber and textiles still end up in landfill each year in the country.
- There are new Australian tech firms. They use chemical or enzymatic recycling, which claims to return mixed automotive plastics to high-grade material. Experts are taking it as a real deal.
6. Fixes On The Horizon — Policy, Tech, And Design
Australia’s industry reports (and government attachments) have flagged the need for:
- a coordinated approach
- better product stewardship
- design-for-recycling rules
- national standards for ELV (end-of-life vehicle) handling
If manufacturers design cars so plastics aren’t glued, interiors are modular, and polymers are more uniform, the “non-recyclable” problem shrinks.
Add targeted chemical recycling plants and stricter producer responsibility laws, and we move from landfill to circularity.
7. What You Can Do
- Choose refurbished or recycled parts when repairing — it’s cheaper and reduces demand for new materials.
- Support brands that report recycled content and clear end-of-life plans.
- When scrapping a car, use licensed dismantlers who separate fluids and hazardous components properly.
The Afterlife Can Be Cleaner
The non-recyclable parts of a car are a great deal of challenge. At one end, you have the mixed residues, tricky polymers and legacy designs.
They push waste to landfills or low-value uses. But Australia’s 2024–2025 reports, innovators and policy push show a path toward better car recycling in Australia and smarter end-of-life vehicle handling. Even the government is supporting such initiatives to strive for a better tomorrow.
With smarter design, stronger regulation and new recycling tech, those “non-recyclable” bits could become feedstock for tomorrow’s cars — not landfill fodder.e
